one my mom has made for years - the main idea was that If everyone followed the same recipe, each family only used 1# of meat and they could put them all together in a big pot to feed everyone at a big doing. This batch serves 4-5.
1 Bottle Heinz Chili Sauce
1 Onion. I prefer sweet yellow, but white works also
1 lb lean ground meat
1 tbsp vinegar (Apple Cider vinegar works well, too)
1 tbsp sugar (splenda also works)
1 package hamburger buns (basic serving method)
2 tubes crescent rolls (alternative serving method)
8 slices, american cheese (alternative serving method)
1chip the onion into small pieces
2brown the ground meat and onions in a skillet, then drain any grease (using 97% lean ground beef reduces the grease significantly)
3Once the meat is browned, add chili sauce, sugar, and vinegar. Mix well.
Note that the original recipe called for 1 cup of chili sauce. It is far easier and less wasteful to simply use the whole bottle.
Alternate Serving method
5line baking sheet with parchment paper
6lay out crescent roll pieces flat on baking sheet
7place 1/2 cheese slice on each crescent roll
8spoon meat mixture evenly on crescent roll
9lay second (stretched) crescent roll over the top of the meat, then pinch edges together
10bake at 350 degrees F for 15 minutes, and serve
